Pre-Operative Instructions For IV Sedations

  • DO NOT eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to your surgery (including water) .
  • DO NOT smoke/vape 48 hours before surgery. NO SMOKING for 10 days after surgery. This will slow down the healing process, disturb sutures and cause dry sockets.
  • DO NOT take aspirin or drink alcoholic beverages 72 hours before your surgery. These are blood thinners.
  • DO NOT take antibiotics or pain medication morning of your surgery.
  • DO NOT drive for 24 hours after surgery.
  • DO NOT drive while taking Valium (If your given Valium)

How You Should Prepare For Your Surgery Date

A responsible ADULT must accompany you to the office, remain at the office during the procedure, drive you home and be with you for the first 24 hours. If your driver is not present, your surgery will be cancelled.

  • Please wear loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves and low-heeled shoes. Please no sandals or flip-flops.
  • Start antibiotic two days before surgery. Please do not take an antibiotic on the morning of your surgery. Resume antibiotic after surgery.
  • Take Valium one hour before surgery with a sip of water only. If given Valium)
  • High blood pressure medication should be taken at the normal time.

Diabetics

Type I and II diabetics must check sugar level on the morning of surgery.

If the sugar level is normal 110-130, NO medication.

If the sugar level is 130 or higher, take half the medication.

If you have an illness such as congestion, cold, fever, or upset stomach, please contact the office.

Post- Operative Instructions

First Day

  • Please eat and drink as soon as you get home (removing the gauze before you eat or drink, replace after eating). A soft diet is advised for 4-5 days.
  • NO SODAS and NO JUICES for 10 days after surgery (it can disturb the blood clot and increase a chance for a dry socket).
  • NO STRAWS, NO SMOKING, and NO SPITTING for 10 days after surgery (it can disturb the blood clot causing a dry socket, bleeding and sinus problems).
  • Take pain medicine 20 minutes after you eat (let your stomach settle).
  • Take antibiotic 2 hours after pain medicine. (DO NOT take pain meds and antibiotics simultaneously as it can upset your stomach.)
  • Replace the gauze after eating or drinking.
  • Change gauze out every 1-2 hours as needed. (changing guaze to often will promote bleeding).

1. If the gauze is very red and saturated, replace it.

2. If the gauze is light pink, do not replace it until needed.

  • If bleeding continues after 3 hours, place pressure on the area for 10 minutes. If there is still no improvement, wet a tea bag, (no gauze), and bite firmly for at least 2 hrs hours. Repeat if needed (herbal or decaffeinated tea will not work).
  • If bleeding persists, call our office at 704-847-7799. We will return your call as soon as possible.
  • Keep yourself elevated during the first through 7days and night with a couple of pillows (laying down flat will increase swelling and bleeding).
  • Keep ice on your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 24hours.
  • DO NOT brush or rinse today.

YOU SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ALONE FOR THE FIRST DAY

Second Day

  • Start brushing your teeth (brushing to the back molars is very important; not doing so can lead to an infection).
  • Start moist heat (wet towel in the microwave for 45 sec or ice packs in wrap can also be heated, read instructions on the blue packs).
  • Start warm salt water rinses (1/4 teaspoon of salt to 8oz glass of water).
  • Do not swish; hold the saltwater on alternating sides for few minutes before letting it dribble out (NO SPITTING). DO NOT RINSE!!

1. No mouthwash for 10 days.

2. Rinse your mouth out 3-4 times daily for 10 days (after every meal).

  • Stitches will usually dissolve within 10 days. (You will be told if your stitches are not dissolvable)

PEAK OF SWELLING OCCURS 3-5 DAYS AFTER SURGERY
