Post-Operative Instructions
First Day:
  • Please eat and drink as soon as you get home (removing the gauze before you eat or drink, replace after eating). A soft diet is advised for 4-5 days.
  • NO SODAS and NO JUICES for 10 days after surgery (it can disturb the blood clot and increase a chance for a dry socket).
  • NO STRAWS, NO SMOKING and NO SPITTING for 10 days after surgery (it can disturb the blood clot causing a dry socket, bleeding and sinus problems).
  • Take pain medicine 20 minutes after you eat (let your stomach settle).
  • Take antibiotic 2 hours after pain medicine. (DO NOT take pain meds and antibiotics at the same time as it can upset your stomach.)
  • Replace the gauze after eating or drinking.
  • Change gauze out every 30-40 minutes as needed.
  1. If the gauze is very red and saturated, replace.
  2. If the gauze is light pink, do not replace until needed.
  • If bleeding continues after 3 hours, place pressure to the area for 10 minutes. If there is still no improvement, wet a tea bag, place in gauze and bite firmly for at least 45 min-1 hour. Repeat if needed (herbal or decaffeinated tea will not work).
  • If bleeding still persists, call our office at 704-847-7799. We will return your call as soon as possible.
  • Keep yourself elevated during the first day and night with a couple of pillows (laying down flat will increase swelling and bleeding).
  • Keep ice on your face for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for the first 23 hours.
  • DO NOT brush or rinse today.
YOU SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ALONE FOR THE FIRST DAY
Second Day:
  • Start brushing your teeth (brushing all the way to the back molars is very important; not doing so can lead to an infection).
  • Start moist heat (wet towel in microwave for 45 sec).
  • Start warm salt water rinses (1/4 teaspoon of salt to 8oz glass of water).
  • Do not swish; hold the salt water on alternating sides for few minutes before letting it dribble out (NO SPITTING).
  1. No mouthwash for 10 days.
  2. Rinse your mouth out 3-4 times daily for 10 days (after every meal).
  • Stitches will usually dissolve within 10 days. (You will be told if your stitches are not dissolvable)
